Origins
The first Thanksgiving was a three-day harvest feast in 1621 between the Wampanoag people and the English colonists, also known as Pilgrims. The feast was held in Plymouth, Massachusetts to celebrate the colonists’ first successful harvest.

National holiday
President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday on October 3, 1863 to help unite the country after the Civil War.

Menu
The first Thanksgiving menu likely included venison, duck, goose, oysters, lobster, eel, and fish, along with pumpkins and cranberries. Turkey was not on the menu.
